Combat and Rage
Marvel's Wolverine is a close-range, parry-driven brawler: claws, kicks, a gap-closing leap and cooldown-based Special Techniques, held together by a Rage meter with three tiers. Rage Tier 2 unlocks Last Stand, the revive that stands in for the Healing Factor, and Tier 3 turns the screen gray and makes weak enemies die in one hit.
Combat in Marvel's Wolverine is up close and fast: Logan closes the gap with a leap, shreds with claw combos, breaks guards with kicks, parries on L1, and builds a Rage meter whose three tiers decide how much damage he deals and whether he gets back up when his health runs out. Liam McIntyre, who plays Logan, sums it up in the Game Features trailer as "fast, fluid, and ferocious", with "swift adamantium attacks", "heavy kicks, fierce barrages, and critical strikes", and senses to keep him sharp. Logan is the only playable character, and there is no gun, bow or ranged weapon beyond the Helix Claws he gains late in the story.

The basics: claws, kicks and the leap
The core loop is a gap-closer and a combo. IGN's Aug 13, 2026 preview describes the "gap-closing leap attack" that puts Logan "right up in the face of an enemy", followed by a basic claw combo or "a powerful kick that can break shields and knock enemies back". The kick is the move with the most uses: it knocks enemies off ledges, into walls and into hazards, and an enemy stunned against a wall takes a barrage, a flurry of stabs that usually kills outright.
In IGN's Sep 10, 2026 review, Simon Cardy says the combos are "delivered through rapid presses of the square and triangle buttons", with the standard dodges, parries and special attacks around them, and that a press of Triangle sends Logan leaping at any enemy in range. He also calls the system "not a complex system" and "quite forgiving", which matches what most reviewers said (Reviews).
The leap is not a quirk of the controls. Insomniac's senior animation director Brian Wyser told But Why Tho? that it has been in the game "since very early in production" because Logan "needed some method" to close a gap, a move players already knew from X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). He frames it as both a character trait ("to appear like an animal") and a tool to "shift the combat space": when a crowd starts to overpower you, you leap to an enemy outside it. In practice it is also how Logan reaches snipers on ledges: the enemy setups on the Enemies page are built around ranged units above a melee crowd, and the leap is the answer.
Holding Square rather than tapping it gives the guard-breaking kick, per Skill Up's Sep 10, 2026 review. Environmental kills come from the same kick: GamingBolt's review mentions kicking an enemy "directly into a furnace", and IGN's preview kicking one into a forklift.
Parry, dodge and stagger
Defense is built on the parry. IGN's preview puts it plainly: "Wolverine is a parry-driven game", so a finger has to hover over L1 because enemies "do not wait around for their turn", and the cybernetically enhanced ones have defenses that the parry is meant to open. Attack colors tell you what to do. PowerPyx's trophy guide says to parry "blue glowing attacks" (the Parry Perfected trophy asks for 500 parries); red attacks are power attacks that cannot be parried and must be dodged; and yellow attacks are reckless attacks that open a special parry to punish the enemy.
Parries and dodges do more than avoid damage. In Steve Saylor's run on the hardest difficulty, he explains that they fill an enemy's stun gauge so stronger attacks land, that audio cues tell you when to parry and when to dodge, and that he slowed the combat speed to make the timing workable (Difficulty Settings and Accessibility). Bosses use the same gauge: on the Sabretooth Boss Fight, parrying his swings fills a yellow stagger meter that, once full, lets a Special Technique pin him for a barrage.
The parry window and the dodge can be widened. Adaptations such as Healing Parry and the parry-timing buffs reward parrying with health, and the game's own Dodge/Parry Input Timing setting makes the window larger for anyone who needs it.
Arekkz Gaming's Sep 16, 2026 combat tips (a video sponsored by PlayStation) spell out the dodge: red power attacks need a dodge, a single press of Circle is a short hop and a double press a longer roll, and a well-timed dodge triggers a slow-motion window for a counterattack once Dodge Retaliate or Power Attack Counter is unlocked. Big boss attacks need the full roll. Later in the game, Logan can also dodge red ranged attacks and answer with an energy beam (the Helix Counter Shot below).
Special Techniques and cooldowns
Holding L2 and pressing a face button fires a Special Technique: big single-target damage, area damage around Logan, or a timed buff. IGN's preview stresses that each one is "tied to individual cool downs rather than a resource that builds up over the course of combat". There are six, four equipped at a time, unlocked by Player Level: Tornado Spin, Knee Breaker, Relentless, Spiral Strike, Overwhelm and Brutal Assault. Their levels, upgrades and which ones to pick are on Skills: Techniques and Adaptations.
Long cooldowns are the most common complaint. Giant Bomb's Sep 10, 2026 review panel said "the cooldowns were way too long", and Skill Up called them "fairly long" even after perk points reduce them. Adaptations that refund cooldowns on parries, dodges and combo enders are the fix most guide makers reach for.
Rage and its three tiers
Rage is the meter that holds the system together. It fills from damage and kills and "slowly diminishes when you're not actively slicing and dicing", so it rewards staying aggressive. IGN's preview describes the tiers this way: Tier 1 is the default and gives nothing extra; Tier 2 adds damage to combo finishers and, most important, Last Stand; Tier 3 turns the background gray, highlights enemies in red, multiplies Logan's damage and makes most weaker enemies "executable immediately".
| Rage Tier | What it gives |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | The default state, no bonus |
| Tier 2 | More damage on combo finishers; Last Stand is available if Logan's health empties |
| Tier 3 | A gray, monochrome screen with enemies in red; much stronger attacks; weak enemies can be executed at once |
Tier 3's look comes from Marvel's "Black, White and Blood" comics, per the PlayStation Blog's Jun 2, 2026 reveal. Mike Daly, the game director, told Game Informer on Nov 3, 2026 that rage is "the backbone of the combat system", an "indicator of momentum": at low rage "you don't have the safety net of Last Stand", and at the top tier "the quick decay of rage makes your rate of kills the top priority". Berserker Rage is something else: the trophy Berserker Unleashed ("Fly into a Berserker Rage") is a story trophy that PowerPyx says unlocks after Something Much Stronger, so it marks a scripted moment in the Canada chapter rather than a meter state (Canada Walkthrough (Missions 4 to 8)).
GamingBolt's Sep 10, 2026 review adds the pieces around the meter: launch points that let Logan hurl himself into enemies, chances to set his claws on fire for extra damage ("Hot Claws", which Brutal Assault also grants), environmental kills, and the Tier 3 attacks that it calls "absolutely jaw-dropping".
The Healing Factor, Last Stand and death
Logan regenerates in a fight, but McIntyre's line in the features trailer is the rule of the game: an "extraordinary healing factor keeps Logan resilient, but he isn't immortal". There are no health packs; Cardy's review calls that "a smart and lore appropriate decision" that means you never hunt around an arena for health.
The revive is tied to Rage. If Logan's health empties while there is Rage to spend, the meter is consumed to restore his health; if there is not, he dies and you return to the last checkpoint. GamingBolt notes one exception: on the lowest difficulty, The Man, Logan regenerates whenever his health bar empties, so he cannot be knocked out at all (Difficulty Settings and Accessibility). Daly explained the design to Game Informer: a constantly regenerating Logan "incentivized the player to slow the pace of combat or even retreat", so Last Stand became "a healing surge that can happen when you lose all your health", "themed as using adrenaline to keep Logan's heart beating".
Stealth and Enhanced Senses
Many fights can open in stealth. In the Jun 2, 2026 extended gameplay video, Reavers search an industrial park for "the redhead" while Logan picks them off one by one and their radio check-ins go unanswered. Logan can drop on enemies from above, strike from behind cover and chain takedowns with the Stealth Leap and Double Takedown techniques. GamingBolt and Steve Saylor both found the stealth basic: tall grass, isolated guards and little else.
Enhanced Senses show enemies, sounds and scents. Daly told Game Informer the rule was that "if Logan could smell or hear something relevant, the player could see it too". The same sense draws the blue scent trail to objectives and collectibles that critics mocked at launch; the toggles that dim or remove it arrived in later updates (Patches and Updates).
Jean Grey, partners and team-up strikes
Logan often fights beside Jean Grey, Mystique or Sabretooth, and IGN's preview mentions "occasional team-ups that organically feature combination attacks between you and your partner", as in Spider-Man 2. The PlayStation Blog's Jun 2, 2026 post says Jean uses telekinesis in fights and joins cooperative critical strikes, and the trophy Blindsided asks for 10 stealth kills on enemies blinded by Jean. Partners are never playable, which Skill Up called the game's "biggest miss".
Helix Claws
Roughly 60% through the story, by MixBreed Gaming's count, Logan's claws gain Helix energy on R1. The three Helix techniques in that video are Charged Helix Blast (hold R1 to fire at distant targets), Helix Combo (a second R1 strike that interrupts advanced enemies) and Helix Counter Shot (circle just before a ranged attack lands to blast the shooter). The trophy Cut Just As Deep asks for 100 kills with them. Where the claws come from is a story spoiler, covered on Ending Explained.
Ability Inhibitors
Bolivar Trask's Ability Inhibitors weaken Logan until they are destroyed: the PlayStation Blog's Aug 13, 2026 hands-on says they block his abilities and his healing. Giant Bomb's review panel joked that "the inhibitor lamps are everywhere", the game's main way to slow Logan down. Break them first; every fight near one is harder while it stands.
What we think
We think the combat is better than its launch reviews suggest and worse than its trailers promised. The opening hours, with three techniques and no Helix Claws, are the weakest part; by the time the Adaptation tree is half full (Skills: Techniques and Adaptations) the cooldown refunds make fights feel like Wolverine should. We think the single most useful habit is to treat Rage as a second health bar: drop out of Tier 2 and you have no Last Stand, so on The Weapon or harder, retreat to a ledge enemy and leap back in rather than letting the meter drain.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Rage tiers in Marvel's Wolverine?
There are three. Tier 1 is the default; Tier 2 adds finisher damage and unlocks Last Stand; Tier 3 grays the screen, boosts damage and makes weak enemies executable at once.
Can Logan die in Marvel's Wolverine?
Yes. If his health empties and he has no Rage for Last Stand, he dies and you restart from a checkpoint. Only the lowest difficulty, The Man, prevents knockouts.
Is there a parry in Marvel's Wolverine?
Yes, on L1, and it is central: parries open guarded enemies and fill stagger meters. Red-flashing attacks cannot be parried and must be dodged.
How do you do a stealth takedown?
Approach an unaware enemy from behind or above and press the takedown prompt; the Stealth Leap and Double Takedown techniques extend it (Skills: Techniques and Adaptations).
Can you play as Jean Grey or Mystique?
No. Logan is the only playable character; partners fight beside him and join team-up attacks.
