Insomniac Marvel Games in Order

Insomniac's Marvel games in release order are Marvel's Spider-Man (Sep 7, 2018), Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (Nov 12, 2020), Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (Oct 20, 2023) and Marvel's Wolverine (Sep 15, 2026), all set in one universe; play them in that order, though Wolverine stands on its own.

Insomniac has made four Marvel games, all set in one shared universe: Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020), Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023) and Marvel's Wolverine (2026). As IGN's ending video puts it, Wolverine is the first game since 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine to revolve around the hero, telling "a completely original story set in the same universe as Insomniac's Spider-Man games". Release order and story order are the same, so the simplest way to play them is the order below.

How the games connect inside Wolverine (billboards, newspapers, skyscrapers) is on Spider-Man Connections and Easter Eggs; the studio itself is on Insomniac Games.

1. Marvel's Spider-Man (2018)

The game that started the universe: an older, experienced Peter Parker in an open-world New York, released on PS4 on Sep 7, 2018. Its first boss was Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, whose tower still stands in Wolverine's world, moved, IGN jokes, to Madripoor. It sold 3.3 million copies in three days, then a record for a PlayStation exclusive.

It was followed by a three-part story DLC, The City That Never Sleeps, which brought back Silver Sable; her company's logo is on Madripoor's skyline in Wolverine. That DLC is the precedent people point to when they ask whether Wolverine will get story DLC (Predictions).

2. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020)

A shorter standalone game starring Miles Morales, released with the PS5 on Nov 12, 2020 and on PS4 the same day. It ends with Simon Krieger, the CEO of Roxxon, arrested, and Wolverine refers to that directly: on a billboard in Japan, Logan wonders if the man is still in jail. It is the clearest sign that Wolverine takes place after Miles Morales. The same day, Insomniac released Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered for PS5, the 2018 game rebuilt for the new console.

The two games shaped Wolverine's team. Brian Wyser, Insomniac's senior animation director, says that after "years of working on Spider-Man 1 and Miles Morales" it was exciting to try something different, and that Wolverine was meant to sit "in the same universe as Spider-Man" while standing alone.

3. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023)

Peter Parker and Miles Morales together, with Venom and Kraven, released on PS5 on Oct 20, 2023. It was revealed in the same PlayStation Showcase as Wolverine, on Sep 9, 2021. It sold more than 2.5 million copies in 24 hours, the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game at the time, and passed 10 million in under four months. Its PC version followed on Jan 30, 2025, and with it Insomniac said: "we have no additional story content planned for Marvel's Spider-Man 2", only free updates such as New Game Plus and new suits (PlayStation Blog, Oct 18, 2024).

That post-launch habit is part of how players judge Wolverine. On IGN's Beyond, the hosts compare the two: Spider-Man 2 left "still other stuff to go around and clean up" after the credits, and Insomniac kept "dropping weird little tidbits" such as a new suit, while Wolverine's linear levels give less reason to come back.

4. Marvel's Wolverine (2026)

Insomniac's fourth Marvel game, released on PS5 on Sep 15, 2026. IGN's preview frames it as the studio trying to "replicate that magic" of Spider-Man, "this time as a traditional linear AAA action game". It is darker, far more violent and much shorter on open space: a story of about 30 missions across four regions, starring Logan and Jean Grey before the X-Men exist. Everything else about it is on this viki, starting at Marvel's Wolverine.

Is it a Spider-Man game with claws? IGN's reviewer, who also reviewed Spider-Man 2, says the storytelling is "the closest kind of connective tissue between the two series"; the controls are similar, but the move from an expansive New York to linear levels is "a big change" and more old school. Fans of the Spider-Man games' stories, he says, will get a similar feeling here.

On length, Giant Bomb's review notes that the PS5 counted 13 hours to finish Wolverine's main story, about what the Spider-Man games' stories took, with Spider-Man 2 "a little bit longer". The full comparison is on How Long to Beat, and the scores side by side are on Reviews.

Which order should you play them in?

Release order: Spider-Man (or Remastered), Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2, then Wolverine. Each Spider-Man game picks up threads from the one before, and Miles Morales is set between the first and Spider-Man 2. Wolverine needs none of them: its story, cast and setting are its own, and the references are a bonus for people who played the others. If you only want Wolverine, start there.

We think the shared universe is now the point. In our view Wolverine's ending (Ending Explained) is built to collide with Spider-Man's New York, and we expect Insomniac's next Marvel game to bring the two worlds closer. Our prediction is on Predictions.

Earlier Wolverine games

Before Insomniac, the best-known Wolverine game was X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), made by Raven Software for Activision as a tie-in to the film. GamingBolt's review says "we haven't had a truly great Wolverine game in what feels like forever", with that 2009 game the one that comes to mind, and calls Insomniac's take possibly "the character's pinnacle in terms of presentation and storytelling".

Not everyone agrees. On Giant Bomb's review, one host lists X-Men Origins: Wolverine with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta as linear character action games he liked "a lot more than this". IGN's ending video adds the key difference: the 2009 game was mostly an adaptation of the film, while Insomniac's is an original story.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to play Spider-Man before Marvel's Wolverine?

No. Wolverine has its own story and cast. Playing the Spider-Man games first only adds to the Easter eggs.

Is Marvel's Wolverine in the same universe as Spider-Man?

Yes. All four of Insomniac's Marvel games share one universe, Earth-1048, and Wolverine references Miles Morales's ending directly.

What is the next Insomniac Marvel game?

None is announced as of Nov 8, 2026. Our guesses are on Predictions.

Are the Insomniac Spider-Man games on PC?

Yes: Spider-Man Remastered (Aug 12, 2022), Miles Morales (Nov 18, 2022) and Spider-Man 2 (Jan 30, 2025). Wolverine is PS5 only so far; see Platforms, PC Port and Performance.

What was the last Wolverine game before this one?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, released in 2009 by Activision and Raven Software.
