Tips and Tricks

The 20 things worth knowing before and during Marvel's Wolverine, from creators' and guides' play - parry blue, dodge red, unlock Healing Strike first, end a barrage with Triangle to heal, spend materials on suits at once (they raise health), put your favorite technique on the combo-ender recharge, and turn off the scent trails if they bother you.

The most useful thing to know in Marvel's Wolverine is that healing is a move, not a pickup: unlock the Healing Strike technique early, stagger an enemy, and press Triangle for a finishing stab that "will instantly fill a chunk of your health", as gameranx puts it in its Sep 15, 2026 tips video, saving a Last Stand you would otherwise burn. The other 19 tips below come from the guides and creators' recorded play we checked, each linked to the page that explains its system in full.

Quick facts

First technique to unlock Healing Strike (gameranx, Arekkz Gaming, Games.gg)
Attack colors Blue: parry. Red: dodge. Yellow: special parry
Best early Adaptation Combo Ender Recharge (Arekkz Gaming)
Spend materials At once: suits raise maximum health
Missable content None; Mission Select unlocks after the second Nightmare Door (PowerPyx)
Scent trails Can be dimmed or switched off since updates 1.001.006 and 1.002.001
Difficulty Change it any time; no trophies depend on it

Combat tips

1. Read the attack colors. Arekkz Gaming's Sep 16, 2026 tips (sponsored by PlayStation) start here: red attacks are power attacks that "can't be parried", so dodge; yellow attacks are reckless attacks that give "a special parry opportunity". PowerPyx adds that ordinary parryable attacks glow blue. Everything else on Combat and Rage builds on this.

2. Unlock Healing Strike first. It is the only way to heal on demand in the first hours, and it works on bosses once their stagger bar breaks. Games.gg and Arekkz Gaming both put it first (Skills: Techniques and Adaptations).

3. End a barrage with Triangle. On a staggered enemy, mashing Square does a barrage that builds Rage; pressing Triangle "right before the final hit" turns it into a Healing Strike, for slightly less Rage but extra damage and a chunk of health. Use the barrage when healthy and the switch when low.

4. Get the charged Staggered Leap. Holding Triangle charges Logan's leap; it deals extra stagger and stuns low-level enemies at once, which sets up tip 3. gameranx calls the pair "the things I relied on the most".

5. Kick into walls and off ledges. Hold Square for a thrust kick: it breaks shields, staggers small enemies into walls at once, and sends anyone near a ledge "flying off of it for an instant kill" (Enemies).

6. Hold R2 with Sprint Block. Arekkz Gaming calls Sprint Block "one of the most underrated early pickups": sprinting, even in combat, blocks incoming fire from the front, so you can run at gunmen without being shredded.

7. Never let Rage fall below Tier 2 in a hard fight. Tier 2 is what gives you Last Stand; without it, an empty health bar is death. Rage drains when you stop attacking, so keep pressure on and use barrages to refill it (Combat and Rage).

8. Build for cooldowns. The recharge Adaptations (Barrage, Combo Ender, Parry and Dodge Recharge) cut the cooldown of the technique on the matching button. Combo Ender Recharge is "a top tier pick": put your most-used technique on that button. The enraged recharge Adaptation adds more at Rage Tier 2 and 3.

9. Use Knee Breaker on bosses. It stuns small enemies at once and deals "a huge amount of stagger damage" to bosses, per Arekkz Gaming, which opens them to barrages and Healing Strikes. MixBreed Gaming's Sep 18, 2026 combat guide adds that it also interrupts power and reckless attacks (Bosses).

10. Try another Lock-On setting. If the camera loses enemies in busy fights or boss arenas, Arekkz Gaming suggests experimenting with the Lock-On option (Off, On-Screen or All) in the settings (Difficulty Settings and Accessibility).

Progression and collectible tips

11. Spend materials on suits as soon as you can. Unlike Spider-Man's suits, these are not just looks: "the more suits you unlock" the more maximum health Logan gets, in tiers up to "200% of your health fully upgraded", per gameranx, who admits hoarding materials on a first run and regretting it. Prices and the full list are on Suits and Claws.

12. Do not hunt every XP Cache. The XP canisters are everywhere and look different by region. gameranx skipped some and still unlocked "roughly 95% of everything on the skill tree" by the end; Arekkz Gaming collected thoroughly and unlocked every technique. Smash what is on your path; the Cache Crusher trophy needs 100.

13. Equip Whisky Finder and Crate Finder while exploring. Arekkz Gaming recommends both Adaptations: they show their collectibles from farther away "and even through walls". Swap them out for a combat build before a boss (Collectibles).

14. Play the three Gauntlet trials for unique suits. Most Nightmare Trials give AP and memories, but the wave trials Last Stand at Cold Pines, Crucible of Tears and Savage Showdown give suits at their top ranks that "can't be unlocked in other ways": Future Fugitive at Gold and Hellverine at Adamantium (Nightmare Doors and Trials).

15. Nothing is missable. PowerPyx's trophy roadmap lists no missables: Mission Select unlocks after you meet the second Nightmare Door, and every collectible can be picked up later (New Game Plus and Mission Replay).

Things the game does not tell you

16. The cabin keeps your whisky. Logan's mind cabin is more than a menu. Its fireplace mantel shows every Whisky Bottle you have found, its bed replays missions, and Logan can strike the famous longing Wolverine pose there, per gameranx (Locations).

17. Fix a torn suit by re-equipping it. Damage shreds Logan's clothes and shows his adamantium skeleton. Cutscenes usually restore the suit, but if you want it clean in play, pause, equip a different suit, re-equip yours and unpause. Triangle on the suit screen also toggles the cowl.

18. Pop the claws whenever you like. Press L2 and R2 together and Logan unsheathes his claws, for screenshots or just for the sound.

19. Map shortcuts to the D-pad. Octorious's Sep 14, 2026 settings video puts Photo Mode on Left, as in Spider-Man, and the collectible tracker on Right: a small icon that grows when a collectible is nearby and grays out once the area is cleared. Mapping Special Techniques to the D-pad is the alternative for one-button techniques.

20. Turn the scent trail into a hint. The blue scent trail that critics mocked can now be dimmed (1.001.005), switched off for collectibles (1.001.006), and for story trails moved behind the Hint button, R3 by default (1.002.001). Settings, Gameplay, Senses has all three (Patches and Updates). The Photo Mode also has a slider for how damaged Logan's model looks, which gameranx found "for the gore sickos".

What we think

We think tips 3 and 8 change the game more than any other: a barrage that ends in a heal and a technique that recharges on every combo ender turn the long cooldowns, the most common complaint in reviews, into a rhythm. We also think most players should switch story scent trails to the R3 hint on day one; the game is linear enough that you will rarely press it.

Frequently asked questions

What should I unlock first in Marvel's Wolverine?

Healing Strike, then Staggered Leap and Sprint Block among the passive Techniques, and Knee Breaker among the Special Techniques.

How do you heal in Marvel's Wolverine?

Logan regenerates slowly; Healing Strike on a staggered enemy heals at once; Relentless speeds regeneration; and Last Stand revives you if you have Rage.

Can you turn off the blue line in Marvel's Wolverine?

Yes, since the October updates: collectible cues can be turned off, and story scent trails can be set to appear only when you press R3.

Are XP crates worth collecting?

Worth smashing on your path, not worth hunting: creators who skipped some still unlocked nearly the whole skill tree.

Is anything missable in Marvel's Wolverine?

No. Mission Select lets you return for every collectible.
