Patches and Updates

Marvel's Wolverine has had five updates as of Nov 8, 2026, from day-one patch 1.001.004 on Sep 15 to 1.002.001 on Oct 6. Most of them answer one complaint, the blue scent trails (dimmed in 1.001.005, made optional for collectibles in 1.001.006, moved behind the R3 hint button for the story in 1.002.001), while 1.002.000 brought Sony's QSSR upscaling to the base PS5.

The current version of Marvel's Wolverine is 1.002.001, released on Oct 6, 2026, and it is the update most players waited for: it "adds the option to toggle story-related Scent trails using the Hint button (default on 'R3')", as Insomniac's notes put it, the last step in a month of changes to the blue lines critics mocked at launch. Caboose read the notes on the day Insomniac posted them, alongside the studio's line that players "now have more control over the visibility of scents, audio cues, and nightmare roots". Five updates have shipped since launch, and no newer one has been found as of Nov 8, 2026. Insomniac posts its notes on its support site; the dates below come from that site's notes as the press reported them.

Vi.ki's own count from these dates: four post-launch updates in 21 days, then none in the 33 days to Nov 8. We think that pause means the next update is a larger content or feature patch rather than another fix.

1.001.004: the day-one patch

The launch-day patch fixed a voice-language bug, a Japan mission where Jean Grey could drop off, and a Telambang door, per MP1st on Sep 15, 2026. It did not touch the senses. gameranx's tips video from that day checked the settings and found that you could change the color of the senses markers "but right now you can't completely turn them off". Insomniac's launch-day post on X said it was "gathering feedback to further refine the player experience", and its Director of Community and Marketing defended the trail: "The scent trail isn't always on. It represents Logan's canon mutant super senses and elite tracking ability."

1.001.005: the scent trails dimmed

Three days later, Insomniac posted a hotfix. Caboose read its notes on Sep 19, 2026, the morning after: it "addresses some common crashes experienced by a small percentage of players since launch", "adjusts the presentation of the scent trails and audio sense indicators, including reduced opacity", and promised that the team was "exploring toggleable options for a future update".

His before-and-after footage shows the change: the old line was "very prominent, very in-your-face", while the new one, especially in daytime missions, is "a lot harder to notice". Until toggles arrived, some players set the trail color to white in the settings to hide it further.

The red trail that Logan follows when chasing Lady Deathstrike or a member of the Hand was dimmed the same way. Caboose's verdict was that it now looks "a lot more like a proper scent trail" than a bright line.

1.001.006: switch the collectible senses off

The next update added three toggles under Settings, Gameplay, Senses: Whisky Bottle Scent Trails, Material Crate Audio Clues and Nightmare Door Roots. With the roots off, Caboose notes, the Nightmare Doors are "a little more hidden". The notes add two rules: the Whisky Finder and Crate Finder Adaptations override the settings, so equipping them brings the cues back (Skills: Techniques and Adaptations); and story-critical senses still appear, such as the trail to "Red" in The One That Got Away. Collectible hunters should leave these on until the Collectibles are done.

1.002.000: QSSR on the base PS5

Released Oct 1, 2026, per Twisted Voxel, 1.002.000 "now uses QSSR for improvements to both image details and image stability on PS5", on by default, and fixed UI, Photo Mode, out-of-bounds, progression, crash, accessibility and localization issues, as Caboose read from the notes.

Digital Foundry's Oct 3, 2026 analysis found the change "transformative" and pointed out that the menu has an on-off toggle, so you can compare it yourself; its detail level "seems to be significantly improved". The resolutions, frame rates and how QSSR compares with the PS5 Pro's PSSR are on Platforms, PC Port and Performance.

1.002.001: story trails on R3

The Oct 6 update lets story scent trails become a hint. Caboose tested it and found "a bit of a catch": with the hint option selected, the line does not vanish entirely, it becomes "an extremely faint blue line" that you would only notice if you knew where to look. Press the right stick and the full trail and the objective marker appear. On his fourth playthrough, he says, he no longer needs the lines at all.

Why the scent trails were there

The trail was never an accessibility option. Caboose pushed back on that claim at the time: a first-time player sees the blue lines with every setting at its default, while Navigation Assist is a separate accessibility feature that still exists (Difficulty Settings and Accessibility). The trail was "a core gameplay feature", Logan tracking a scent.

Game director Mike Daly explained the thinking to Game Informer on Nov 3, 2026: the rule was that "if Logan could smell or hear something relevant, the player could see it too", but "we saw feedback from players that interpreted senses as abstract designer guidance". The answer was to make trails "give a stronger impression that they belong in the world rather than being an abstraction", to add "options to remove the sense cues for optional collectibles", and "one to make scent trails dimmer until the player requests a hint". Skill Up's review, which called the trail a "GPS scent line" that "robs the player of their agency", was the best-known version of the complaint (Reviews).

What players still ask for

With the trail settled, Caboose's wish list turns to content: a sleeveless version of the Deadpool and Wolverine suit, a realistic classic yellow-and-blue suit (the existing Animated suit is cel-shaded), and more from the Nightmare Gauntlet. Insomniac has announced none of these as of Nov 8, 2026. Our guesses about DLC are on Predictions.

What we think

We think Insomniac handled the scent trail well once it moved: three updates in three weeks, each matching a step it had promised in public, ending with exactly the "hint" option Daly described. We expect the next update to add free suits or Nightmare Gauntlet content rather than more fixes, and we think a classic yellow-and-blue suit is the likeliest single addition, since it is the most requested look missing from the 32 (Suits and Claws).
