Skills: Techniques and Adaptations
Logan grows in two trees. Techniques (six active Special Techniques plus passive moves) are bought with Technique Points from leveling up; Adaptations are passive buffs slotted into Strands, bought with Adaptation Points from Whisky Bottles and Nightmare Trials. Tornado Spin, Knee Breaker and the healing Adaptations are the guides' first picks.
Marvel's Wolverine has two upgrade systems. Techniques are moves: six Special Techniques you fire with L2 and a face button, four equipped at once, plus a tree of passive Techniques that add new inputs to Logan's combos; they cost Technique Points, earned by leveling up. Adaptations are passive buffs, "deflecting bullets, absorbing damage, or terrifying Logan's attackers" in the Game Features trailer's words, slotted into a limited number of Strands and bought with Adaptation Points (AP) from Whisky Bottles and Nightmare Trials. How the moves feel in a fight is on Combat and Rage; where the AP comes from is on Collectibles.
Quick facts

| Technique nodes | 36 in a normal run, 4 more in New Game Plus (Games.gg) |
| Player Level | Trophy at 36 (Ultimate Predator); 40 is the highest level any guide reports |
| Adaptation Points | Whisky Bottles 2 AP each; Nightmare Trials 1 to 4 AP by rank (GamingBolt) |
| Adaptation Level | 10 in a normal run (10 Strands), 15 in New Game Plus (20 Strands) |
| Adaptations | 25, plus 4 "Reckless" Adaptations in New Game Plus (GamingBolt) |
| Trophies | Secondary Mutations (Adaptation Level 10), Ultimate Predator (Level 36) |
The six Special Techniques
Each Special Technique unlocks at a Player Level and has two upgrades bought with Technique Points. The levels below are from GamingBolt's Oct 2, 2026 guide; the upgrade effects are from that guide and from the skill screen MixBreed Gaming reads out in its combat guide, which agree.
| Technique | Unlocks at | What it does | Upgrades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tornado Spin | Level 2 | Multi-hit spin around Logan that builds Rage | Longer spin that cuts some guards and counters attacks; then more range and damage, breaks all blocks |
| Knee Breaker | Level 4 | Staggers one enemy and interrupts power and reckless attacks | More stagger damage and faster recharge on interrupts; then area stagger on impact |
| Relentless | Level 7 | Faster Healing Factor recovery for a while | Longer duration and shrugs off basic attacks; then a healing burst when near death |
| Spiral Strike | Level 13 | High-damage drill that breaks out of a crowd | Use twice in a row; then three times |
| Overwhelm | Level 22 | Charge, tackle and mount an enemy for a barrage | Knocks others back and chains to a new target on a kill; then kills recharge it faster |
| Brutal Assault | Level 25 | Dash into a combo that breaks every defense | More strikes and kills build Rage; then Hot Claws, a closing area strike, and kills recharge it |
Brutal Assault is the late-game standout in MixBreed Gaming's run: "dash to a target and deliver a vicious combo that breaks through all enemy defense", with Hot Claws and an area strike at level 3, and kills during it that recharge it. It works on bosses too, since stronger enemies build more Rage.
The PlayStation Blog's Jun 2, 2026 reveal also named a "Bull Rush" move. No technique of that name appears in the released game's lists we checked, and we think it was renamed before launch, most likely to Overwhelm, the only other charge.
Which Special Techniques to equip
The guides do not fully agree, so here are both readings and ours.
- GamingBolt (Oct 2, 2026): Tornado Spin is "likely the go-to" for the whole game; Spiral Strike for escaping a crowd; Overwhelm has "some utility" once upgraded; Knee Breaker is targeted and used less; Relentless is not worth a slot because Adaptations keep you alive instead.
- Games.gg (Sep 15, 2026): recommends Knee Breaker at Level 4 among its early priorities.
Arekkz Gaming's Sep 16, 2026 combat tips show the setup it used for most of its playthrough: Knee Breaker for its stagger damage, Tornado Spin, which "basically never left our setup", Relentless so that "you always have a heal ready", and, later, Overwhelm, a charging grab that leads into a barrage or a Healing Strike. That loadout is the opposite of GamingBolt's on Relentless, and the reason is given in the same breath: with Relentless doing the healing, the Adaptation slots that healing Adaptations would take go to recharge rate and extra damage instead.
The same video calls Knee Breaker "incredibly good for building stagger": it stuns smaller enemies at once and deals "a huge amount of stagger damage" to larger enemies and bosses, and the charged leap (hold Triangle once unlocked) adds a surprising amount of stagger too.
We think the best loadout for a first run on The Mutant is Tornado Spin, Knee Breaker, Spiral Strike and Brutal Assault once you reach Level 25, swapping Relentless in for any boss you keep losing to. Knee Breaker is underrated in GamingBolt's list: interrupting reckless attacks and filling stagger meters is exactly what bosses demand (Bosses).
Passive Techniques
The rest of the Techniques tree adds moves rather than buttons. MixBreed Gaming's skill screen lists them; the early ones arrive in the first hours, and the Helix moves late in the story.
| Passive Technique | Effect (as read from the skill screen) |
|---|---|
| Savage Sprinter | While sprinting, tap Square for a multi-target strike that builds Rage per hit |
| Staggered Leap | Hold Triangle to charge a lunge that deals stagger damage |
| Sprint Block | Sprinting automatically blocks basic ranged fire from the front |
| Healing Strike | Against a staggered enemy, tap Triangle for heavy damage that restores health |
| Jump Strike | Mid-combo, tap X to launch upward, then Square to slam or Triangle to leap to another target |
| Stealth Leap | In stealth, tap Triangle to leap to a target and kill most enemies instantly |
| Unblockable Ender | A stronger finisher on Square-Square-Square-Triangle or Triangle-Square-Square-Triangle that breaks blocks |
| Dodge Retaliate | After dodging a melee attack, tap Square for a shredding counter |
| Double Takedown | After a stealth takedown or Stealth Leap, tap Triangle to take down another enemy |
| Power Attack Counter | After dodging a power attack, counter with a stagger attack |
| Advanced Parry | A parry that also deflects other incoming melee attacks |
| Staggered Throw | Hold Square on a staggered enemy to throw them into others or hazards, aimed with L3 |
| Lethal Disarm | Parry a ranged enemy's melee attack to destroy the weapon and execute them |
| Charged Helix Blast | Hold R1 to fire a ranged Helix blast |
| Helix Combo | A second R1 strike right after a Helix attack, which interrupts advanced enemies |
| Helix Counter Shot | Tap Circle just before a ranged attack lands to blast the shooter |
Games.gg's Sep 15, 2026 guide names Healing Strike, Savage Sprinter, Staggered Leap and Sprint Block as the early priorities, and we agree: Healing Strike is the only way besides Adaptations to heal on demand in the first hours. Techniques are locked by level, so Games.gg's advice to spend points as soon as you have them is right; there is nothing to save for.
Technique Points and the level cap
Technique Points come from Player Levels, earned with XP from kills and from smashing the blue XP Caches (red lanterns in Japan) that line each level. Games.gg counts 36 Technique nodes in a normal playthrough and four more in New Game Plus. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds three Technique Points and a pre-order one more, per the PlayStation Blog (Editions and Price).
The trophy Ultimate Predator is for reaching Player Level 36. GAMEWAVE's Sep 15, 2026 guide gives 40 as the maximum level. Insomniac has said only that New Game Plus has "an increased level cap and exclusive techniques and adaptations" (New Game Plus and Mission Replay). We think 36 is the cap of a first run and 40 the New Game Plus cap: four extra Technique nodes need four extra levels, and that reading makes both guides right.
Adaptations, Strands and AP
Adaptations are bought with AP and slotted into Strands; you own more Adaptations than you can equip. MixBreed Gaming's screen shows that "once you get 68 out of 68 AP" you reach 10 Strands of DNA, the most a first run allows (Adaptation Level 10, the Secondary Mutations trophy). GamingBolt's Sep 18, 2026 guide gives the sources: 2 AP per Whisky Bottle and 1, 2, 3 or 4 AP for a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Adamantium rank on each of the 14 Nightmare Trials, cumulative, so moving from Gold to Adamantium adds one.
Vi.ki's own arithmetic from those figures: 20 bottles give 40 AP and 14 trials at Adamantium give 56, so a full clear is worth 96 AP against the 68 that Level 10 needs. That is why PowerPyx says only about 73.5% completion is required for Adaptation Level 10, and why you can skip the hardest Adamantium ranks (Nightmare Doors and Trials, Whisky Bottle Locations). New Game Plus raises the cap to Adaptation Level 15, each level from 11 adding two Strands for 20 in all, and adds four "Reckless" Adaptations to the 25 (GamingBolt).
The best Adaptations
MixBreed Gaming, playing on the hardest difficulty, builds for health: Healing Dangerously (reacting to power or reckless attacks restores health), Healing Dodge, Healing Parry, Desperate Regeneration (below 35% health, regeneration speeds up until 50%) and Healing Crit (critical strikes restore health).
The rest of that build feeds critical strikes and ranged defense: Rage Intimidation (entering Rage Tier 2 intimidates nearby basic enemies, enabling a critical strike), Bullet Sponge (less damage from ranged enemies, useful in the later Nightmare Trial waves), and the Tier Two Crit, Leaping Crit and Chain Crit options it plans to swap in.
The tree splits four ways, by MixBreed's count: health and regeneration, Special Technique recharge, Rage building, and critical strikes. One recharge Adaptation speeds every technique's cooldown at Rage Tier 2 and more at Tier 3. Update 1.001.006 confirms two utility Adaptations by name, Whisky Finder and Crate Finder, which show those collectibles (Patches and Updates).
Not every creator agrees on healing. Arekkz Gaming's Sep 16, 2026 combat tips say "we personally didn't get much use out of things like healing crit and healing parry" because the health returned "wasn't too significant", and that the Relentless technique heals better. Its picks are the recharge Adaptations (Barrage, Combo Ender, Parry and Dodge Recharge, with Combo Ender Recharge "a top tier pick"), the enraged recharge, Rage Intimidation with Chain Crit to jump from one critical strike to the next, and later Rage Longer, which slows the decay of Tier 3 Rage.
| Build | Adaptations named in creators' runs | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Healing | Healing Dangerously, Healing Dodge, Healing Parry, Desperate Regeneration, Healing Crit | The Weapon and The Best There Is |
| Cooldowns | Barrage Recharge, Combo Ender Recharge, Parry Recharge, Dodge Recharge, the enraged recharge Adaptation | Using Special Techniques as often as possible |
| Critical strikes and Rage | Rage Intimidation, Tier Two Crit, Leaping Crit, Chain Crit, Rage Longer | Fast clears at Rage Tier 2 and 3 |
| Utility | Whisky Finder, Crate Finder, Bullet Sponge | Collecting, and arenas full of gunfire |
We think the cooldown build is the one that fixes the game's biggest complaint, long cooldowns, and should be the first four Strands for most players. On The Man or The Hunter the healing Adaptations matter far less, since Last Stand rarely runs out.
What reviewers said about progression
IGN's Simon Cardy found the tree thin: "there are unlockable skills and special abilities", but "only a handful", available "relatively early on", and they "didn't change my approach to combat in any significant manner". GamingBolt's review counted "roughly two dozen skills" and thought Adaptations lift them. The two views meet in the middle: the Special Techniques are front-loaded, while most of the change comes from the passive moves and the Strand builds above, which arrive in the second half.
