Release Date and Launch
Marvel's Wolverine came out on Sep 15, 2026, on PlayStation 5 only. It was dated on Feb 24, 2026, reviews went up on Sep 10, and a day-one update, 1.001.004, was out on launch day.
Marvel's Wolverine came out on Tuesday, Sep 15, 2026, on PlayStation 5, and the PlayStation Store lists the same date. In the official Game Features trailer, Liam McIntyre, the voice of Logan, gives the date himself: the game "is soon to launch on September 15th, 2026". It launched on one platform, on the same day worldwide, with no early access period for any edition: the "early access" in the pre-order bonus is early access to a suit, not to the game. Four years passed between the reveal in September 2021 and launch day. Patches after launch day are on Patches and Updates; what the editions cost is on Editions and Price.

When did Marvel's Wolverine come out?
On Sep 15, 2026. Insomniac's Aaron Jason Espinoza wrote on the PlayStation Blog after the June State of Play that the game "arrives September 15, 2026, on PlayStation 5", and that never moved. It came out on a Tuesday, and PlayStation published no regional exceptions to the date.
What time did it unlock?
No hour was ever published. Neither the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Store nor Insomniac gave an unlock time, so this viki does not state one. The physical disc is fully playable without the day-one update, which GamingBolt reported Insomniac "encouraged" players to install anyway.
On launch eve, McIntyre told BBC News he had heard rumors that the Insomniac team would mark the night at a game store's midnight launch, "and if that is true, I would happily be there", and that the cast had a WhatsApp group to celebrate "all the hard work we've done over these 5 years". That is the closest thing to a launch-night plan anyone at the studio described in public.
How the date was set
The road from reveal to release took five public steps. The first year was silence: after the September 2021 teaser, Wolverine was absent from the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, and the next real look came only in September 2025, when a State of Play showed gameplay and set "Fall 2026". At the end of that day's developer featurette, the team promised: "We can't wait to show you more in spring of 2026."
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| Sep 9, 2021 | Revealed with a teaser at PlayStation Showcase 2021, beside Marvel's Spider-Man 2 |
| Dec 19, 2023 | Insomniac's files, including Wolverine material, posted by ransomware attackers; Insomniac gave no date then |
| Sep 24, 2025 | State of Play: gameplay trailer, cover art by Jock, Liam McIntyre named, "Fall 2026" |
| Feb 24, 2026 | A six-second video: "Let's cut to the chase: Marvel's Wolverine launches September 15, 2026" |
| Jun 2, 2026 | State of Play: 7.5 minutes of gameplay, editions, prices; pre-orders open |
| Aug 11, 2026 | Battle Yellow PS5 bundle and controllers revealed; pre-orders Aug 19 |
| Aug 13, 2026 | Preview embargo: first hands-on reports |
| Sep 10, 2026 | Review embargo |
| Sep 15, 2026 | Launch, with update 1.001.004 |
Spring 2026 came and went without the promised look: Game Informer noted that the February 2026 State of Play skipped the game, and the date arrived instead as a six-second video on Insomniac's social channels. The "more" came on Jun 2, 2026 instead. Each of these showings, with its trailer, is on Trailers; what happened inside the studio over those years is on Insomniac Games.
Was Marvel's Wolverine delayed?
Not after it had a date. Sep 15, 2026 held from the day it was announced. The only "delay" readers sometimes mean is the five years since the 2021 reveal, which never named a year, and the missed "spring of 2026" showing. Material from the December 2023 leak that discussed schedules was never confirmed by Insomniac or Sony, and this viki does not treat it as a source. We think the long silence between 2021 and 2025 was mostly Spider-Man 2, which shipped in October 2023 from the same studio, plus a leadership change in 2024; see Insomniac Games.
The June State of Play and pre-orders
Pre-orders opened on Jun 2, 2026, right after State of Play showed seven and a half minutes of uninterrupted play. The segment ends with Logan finding Jean in a Trask yard ("There you are, Red") and the two of them fighting their way out. The same night the PlayStation Blog listed both editions, the prices in four currencies and the pre-order bonus (the Classic Brown suit, Reflective Claws, one Technique Point and four PS avatars), all on Editions and Price.
Previews and reviews
Hands-on previews went up on Aug 13, 2026, after a press event where writers played about two and a half hours. IGN's previewer closed his video "impressed but not thoroughly blown away", praising the story and combat feel but asking whether the fights would hold up over a whole campaign, and reminded viewers it "releases on PlayStation 5 on September 15th". The PlayStation Blog's hands-on report published the same day.
Reviews followed on Sep 10, five days before launch: Game Informer's 8.5, IGN's and GameSpot's 6, Giant Bomb's 2.5 out of 5. IGN's video review opens on the gore ("it takes more than blood to get my heart pumping") and says the story does "most of the heavy lifting" while the combat wears thin before the end. Scores and the reaction are on Reviews; how it sold anyway is on Sales.
The launch trailer
The launch trailer arrived on Sep 3 and 4, 2026, shown in a State of Play and posted by Marvel Entertainment. It leans on Trask: "We need to find Trask. He's figured out a way to detect mutants with machines", ending on a robotic "Mutant detected", the title of the game's tenth mission. A live-action spot followed on Sep 10. The full list is on Trailers.
The day-one update and install size
Update 1.001.004 was live on Sep 15, 2026. MP1st's list of its fixes includes English voice-over not playing on consoles set to another language, Jean disappearing in a Japan mission and Logan unable to slide under a prison door in Telambang. Reviewers had played without it: GamingBolt, which finished the game on a PS5 Pro, reported smooth performance but a few rare bugs, including one checkpoint reload when the game would not progress, and expected "a patch to iron them out fairly quickly". It was the first of five updates by Oct 6, 2026; the rest are on Patches and Updates.
Notebookcheck reported a download of about 81.4 GB including the day-one update before launch. The PlayStation Store lists no size as of Nov 8, 2026, so we treat that figure as a pre-launch report; leave about 90 GB free to be safe with later patches.
The launch week in order
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Sep 10, 2026 | Reviews and the live-action trailer |
| Sep 14, 2026 | Early copies: the first full walkthroughs and boss videos appear on YouTube a day early |
| Sep 15, 2026 | Launch on PS5; update 1.001.004; Battle Yellow hardware on sale |
| Sep 15 to 18, 2026 | Kotaku and others publish the ending and post-credits explainers (see Ending Explained) |
| Sep 19, 2026 | Week ending: No. 1 on the UK boxed chart (see Sales) |
| Sep 19 to 21, 2026 | Hotfix 1.001.005: crash fixes, fainter scent trails |
| Sep 28, 2026 | Update 1.001.006: Senses toggles |
We think the early YouTube walkthroughs dated Sep 14 mattered more than usual: full no-commentary runs of the whole game were online before launch, and anyone avoiding the ending had to avoid YouTube for a week. If you are reading for spoilers, the Story page stops before the final act.

Patches and UpdatesMarvel's Wolverine has had five updates as of Nov 8, 2026, from day-one patch 1.001.004 on Sep 15 to 1.002.001 on Oct 6. Most of them answer one complaint, the blue scent trails (dimmed in 1.001.005, made optional for collectibles in 1.001.006, moved behind the R3 hint button for the story in 1.002.001), while 1.002.000 brought Sony's QSSR upscaling to the base PS5.

Editions and PriceMarvel's Wolverine costs $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition, which adds five suits, five claws and three Technique Points. As of Nov 8, 2026 the Deluxe Edition is on sale for $59.99 in the US PlayStation Store until Nov 21, cheaper than the Standard. -

The ones that show real gameplay are the Sep 24, 2025 gameplay trailer, the Jun 2, 2026 extended gameplay reveal and the Aug 28, 2026 Game Features trailer.

Insomniac GamesMarvel's Wolverine was made by Insomniac Games, the Burbank studio behind Spyro, Ratchet & Clank and Marvel's Spider-Man, owned by Sony since 2019; it was revealed in 2021 under Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, finished under game director Mike Daly, and survived a 2023 ransomware attack that leaked part of its development.
-
ReviewsMarvel's Wolverine scores 75 on Metacritic from 149 critics and 76 on OpenCritic, as of Nov 8, 2026, with players at 6.7. Critics praised the story, Jean Grey and the gore and faulted repetitive combat, heavy hand-holding and few bosses; it is the lowest-rated of Insomniac's Marvel games.

SalesMarvel's Wolverine was the best-selling game in the US in September 2026 by Circana's count, with Sony's biggest launch-month dollar sales since Helldivers 2, and it opened at No. 1 on the UK boxed chart. Sony's first official figure, in its earnings report of Nov 5, 2026, is 2.4 million copies sold worldwide by Nov 4, 2026, in line with the analysts' estimates of about 2.2 to 2.5 million.
