Story

Marvel's Wolverine follows Logan, a centuries-old mutant with gaps in his memory, as he rejoins Team X to stop Bolivar Trask's Reavers from kidnapping mutants, a chase that runs from the jungles of Telambang through Canada and Madripoor to Japan. This page tells the story up to the final mission; the ending has its own page.

Marvel's Wolverine is the story of Logan rejoining Team X, a small mutant task force, to stop the billionaire Bolivar Trask and his cybernetic Reavers from kidnapping mutants, and of the memories he recovers along the way. PlayStation describes Trask as "a billionaire industrialist driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority" and Jean Grey as "a powerful telekinetic and emergent leader of the captured mutants". The chase crosses four regions in 30 missions, and Logan comes back to a team he walked away from three years earlier. In the Comic-Con story trailer, Jean puts the theme plainly: humans and mutants, she says, "can't survive together".

This page covers the setup and each region in order. The first sections are safe to read before playing; a clear warning comes before the late game. Everything about the final mission, the twist behind it and the scenes after the credits is on Ending Explained, and the people are on Characters.

Who is Logan in this story?

Logan here is the character fans know, with one emphasis turned up: his memory. In Insomniac's first featurette, a developer calls him "an unreliable narrator" with gaps in his memory, a man who "doesn't really remember a lot of his life", and the same video introduces him by his full name, James Logan Howlett. He is a mutant with adamantium claws and a healing factor, and the game treats his past as a mystery he solves one fragment at a time.

The "Ain't No Hero" trailer of Jul 16, 2026 is built on that fear. Over the footage Logan says he has lived long enough that "it's all started to blur together", that he can feel who he is "slipping away", and that when it is gone nothing will be left "except the rage". That line is the spine of the whole game: a man afraid that the animal inside him is all that will remain. Game director Mike Daly told Game Informer the team saw Logan as "a man with centuries of experiences that he can't remember".

What is Team X?

Team X is the three-mutant strike force Logan belongs to when the game opens: Wolverine, Sabretooth and Mystique, "all led by a not-yet-sinister-looking man named Nathaniel Essex", as IGN's Aug 13, 2026 preview puts it. Essex is their mentor and runs a refuge for mutants, which sets the team against Trask, who wants mutants gone. The X-Men do not exist yet; Daly's own summary is "There are no X-Men to help".

IGN's review sets the timeline: the story starts "a few decades after" Logan first met Essex and was taken into his mutant community, where he became a key member of Team X. Something is already wrong when the game begins, and Logan is sent to investigate Trask amid reports of missing mutants. From there the story "hops around the globe", to new places and to old haunts that stir up buried memories.

Telambang: rescuing Essex (Missions 1 to 3)

The game opens in the jungles of Telambang with Essex in Trask's hands. In IGN's preview the first mission is Team X setting out to rescue their mentor, with Mystique warning that it has been 48 hours since he was taken. The three missions, Back in Action, A Debt Repaid and Last Meal, move from the jungle to a Trask outpost and then to the Trask compound (KeenGamer), where the chapter ends with the game's first boss, Omega Red.

Omega Red is personal. In AFGuidesHD's recording of the fight, he taunts Logan with a question, "Do you even know why your team rejected me?", and says that at least the Reavers "don't care what or who I crave". In this story he is a mutant Team X once turned away, now fighting alongside the Reavers. The fight itself is on Omega Red Boss Fight, and the mission steps on Telambang Walkthrough (Missions 1 to 3).

Canada: home, Vancouver and Leech (Missions 4 to 8)

The second chapter takes Logan to Canada: the Yukon wilderness, where he has a cabin, and the city of Vancouver. Its five missions are Homecoming, The One That Got Away, Raise Some Hell, Strays and Something Much Stronger (PowerPyx). It includes a motorcycle chase on a Canadian highway, which has its own trophy, Road Rage.

The extended gameplay shown at the Jun 2, 2026 State of Play is a Reaver hunt in a city's industrial park: the soldiers are looking for "the one that got away", a redhead, and Logan is hunting them. The phrase is also the name of Mission 5, set in Vancouver, and the redhead turns out to be Jean Grey.

Logan finds her in the same video, with the line "There you are, Red." That nickname, Red, carries through the rest of the game. Jean is the emotional center of the story; IGN's reviewer singled out her performance as the anchor that keeps the game from "veering into run-of-the-mill comic book storytelling".

Canada also introduces Leech, a young mutant who can cancel other mutants' powers. In IGN's Easter egg video, the mission Strays takes place in Team X's hideout after Logan has convinced Leech to go and see Walter, Essex's right-hand man, and a TV in the hideout reports the refinery fire Logan started in the mission before.

Leech is the subject of one of the story's quieter stretches. IGN's review describes coaxing him out of a locked room: he demands a password, and Logan walks around Essex's manor collecting three crayon drawings before solving the riddle himself. The reviewer used it as an example of the game's two speeds, "full throttle bloodshed and introspective calm". Details are on Canada Walkthrough (Missions 4 to 8).

Madripoor: Trask's machines (Missions 9 to 12)

The trail leads to Madripoor, a lawless island city split between rich Hightown and poor Lowtown. The launch trailer gives the stakes: Team X needs to find Trask because "he's figured out a way to detect mutants with machines". The four missions are Knock Knock, Mutant Detected, For Our Future and One Last Mission, and the chapter's boss is Trask's machine, the Sentinel Prototype, in For Our Future (KeenGamer).

Madripoor is also where the game slows down. Lowtown is a safe haven for mutants, and the Princess Bar there, run by Tyger, is the social hub. IGN's previewer called it a favorite stretch: talking to other mutants, arm wrestling Sabretooth and playing a "revealing game of Never Have I Ever" with Mystique. The area is on Locations, and the missions on Madripoor Walkthrough (Missions 9 to 12).

Japan: the Hand (Missions 13 to 21)

The longest chapter goes to Japan, nine missions from Jetlag, a fight aboard a plane, through neon-lit Shinjuku to Mount Haku. Here the enemy changes. The story trailer's line "Tell the beast. The hand is ready" introduces the Hand, a ninja cult that worships a master called the Beast, and that knows Logan from long before he lost his memories. Lady Deathstrike, who is bound up with the Hand, is the boss of Death's Match on Mount Haku. The chapter also brings in Shiro Yoshida, Sunfire, whose penthouse Logan visits in Tokyo. The missions are on Japan Walkthrough (Missions 13 to 21).

Spoiler warning: the late game

The rest of this page describes events from the end of the Japan chapter and the return to Madripoor, up to but not including the final mission. If you have not reached Mission 20, stop here.

On Mount Haku, Lady Deathstrike calls Logan "Shinigami" and says the two of them are finally "exactly where we're supposed to be". She blames him for cutting her off from the Beast's voice, and Logan fights her to make her "pay for what you did to Walter": in AFGuidesHD's recording of the fight, Essex's right-hand man is dead by this point, and Deathstrike killed him. What the name Shinigami means, and who the Beast really is, belongs to Ending Explained.

The Japan chapter ends with Sinister Tidings, a mission whose name hints at what Team X is about to learn about itself. The story then goes back to Madripoor for nine missions, from Way Down Low to Brave New World. On the way, Logan goes undercover in a casino as "Patch", a nod to the alias he used in Madripoor in the comics (the trophy Undercover asks you to dress up as Patch).

Late in the game Logan dies and comes back. In Insomniac's motion-capture featurette, the cinematics director describes his favorite moment, "when Logan is reborn and he digs himself out of a grave", torn apart but still longing for Jean. It is the clearest image of what the healing factor costs him.

The last big fight before the finale is Logan against Sabretooth in Lowtown, in Red Right Hand. Victor has been changed by the Helix Engine and claims a voice speaks to him through it. What drives him is old: "You're always running," he tells Logan, "but did you ever ask if I wanted to come?" and then, "You destroyed our family." Daly told Game Informer the studio knew "an epic confrontation with Sabretooth was going to be a thing from the start". The fight is on Sabretooth Boss Fight.

After that, three missions lead to the final confrontation, No Coming Back, and the epilogue, Brave New World. Who Logan fights there, and how the story ends, is on Ending Explained.

How the story is told

Marvel's Wolverine is linear, not open world: the story moves through levels in a set order, with hub breaks in Lowtown and Essex's manor. IGN's review called it "solid superhero fare with a couple of predictable turns" and "some genuinely fun moments in its closing hours", but said the missions save almost every moment of consequence for the cutscenes that bookend them.

GamingBolt's review went the other way, calling the story "one of the most tightly knit narratives Insomniac has ever told", emotionally charged yet grounded, with room for its characters to shine. The verdicts are collected on Reviews.

We think the story's best idea is making memory the thing Logan fights for, rather than revenge. Every region gives him back a piece of himself, and the Lowtown and manor scenes let the cast breathe in a way the corridors of combat do not. In our view the weakest part is the middle: the Madripoor chapter is short, and the Sentinel Prototype fight is the least personal of the bosses. We would play the story chapters through rather than splitting them, because the regions are short and each ends on a hook.
