Characters

The main characters of Marvel's Wolverine are Logan, Jean Grey, Team X (Sabretooth and Mystique, led by Nathaniel Essex) and their enemy Bolivar Trask, with Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike and the Hand as villains and Leech, Walter, Tyger, Callisto, Shiro Yoshida and Toad among the mutants Logan meets. The X-Men do not exist yet in this game.

The main characters of Marvel's Wolverine are Logan, Jean Grey and the rest of Team X, Sabretooth and Mystique under their leader Nathaniel Essex, set against Bolivar Trask and his Reavers, with Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike as the other big villains. In Insomniac's first featurette, a developer teased that Omega Red "makes an appearance", Mystique "is there", and there are hints to other characters fans of Wolverine will recognize. This version of Marvel takes place before the X-Men exist, so the cast is built from Wolverine's own corner of the comics rather than the famous team.

This page says who each character is in this game. Who plays them is on Voice Cast, and how to beat the ones you fight is on Bosses. Late-game spoilers are kept out: where a character's true role is a twist, this page says so and points to Ending Explained.

Logan (Wolverine)

Logan is James Logan Howlett, played by Liam McIntyre, and he is the only character you control. He is a centuries-old mutant with adamantium claws and a healing factor, and with large gaps in his memory. McIntyre describes him as a man people hurt, take from and betray, who "still fights for people who can't fight for themselves".

This Logan is softer than the films' version, and that surprised reviewers. Skill Up's review, which was otherwise critical, calls Insomniac's Logan "a genuinely nice guy": a team player rather than a lone wolf, patient with those around him, good with kids, and someone who says sorry when he gets it wrong, while still "as ferocious and animalistic" as expected in a fight. Where Logan's claws and dark side really come from is the biggest twist of the game and is explained on Ending Explained.

Jean Grey

Jean Grey is the heart of the story. PlayStation calls her "a powerful telekinetic and emergent leader of the captured mutants", a woman Trask's Reavers are hunting when Logan first meets her and nicknames her "Red". IGN's reviewer called her performance fantastic and said she "anchors a lot of the emotional weight" of the story. She also fights at Logan's side: her telekinesis joins his attacks, and the trophy Blindsided asks for ten stealth kills on enemies she has blinded.

At San Diego Comic-Con, her actor described playing her as "simultaneously holding the fact that she knows so much" while still having to discover everything, a woman who can usually see people clearly but finds "there's more going on" with Logan. That double knowledge is not an acting note alone; it is the key to her story, and the reason is a spoiler kept for Ending Explained.

Team X: Nathaniel Essex, Sabretooth and Mystique

Team X is a three-person mutant task force: Wolverine, Sabretooth and Mystique, led by Nathaniel Essex, who is also their mentor and a man trying to help mutants everywhere. Rescuing Essex from Trask is the game's first mission. PlayStation calls Team X "a last-stand mutant task force", and Logan returns to it after leaving three years before the game.

Nathaniel Essex runs a manor and refuge for mutants, the Essex Institute, and plays the father figure Charles Xavier would play in other stories. Skill Up says it is "very difficult to talk about his performance without going into spoilers", and calls Essex maybe his favorite part of the game. Comic readers will know the name; what Essex becomes is on Ending Explained.

Sabretooth (Victor Creed) is Logan's teammate, rival and dark mirror; Skill Up calls him "a reminder of just how dangerous and unhinged Wolverine could be". The same review says Mystique gets the worst deal, often "relegated to mission ops", the voice reminding you of your objective, though you do fight alongside her at times. In the Sentinel Prototype fight, Mystique staggers the machine so Logan can attack (Sentinel Prototype Boss Fight).

For much of the game, Victor fights beside Logan. In AFGuidesHD's recording of the Sentinel Prototype battle, Logan asks if the machine is "big enough for you, Victor", and Sabretooth answers that he does not like the giant but is "having the time of my life". The rivalry turns into the late game's grudge match, on Sabretooth Boss Fight.

GamingBolt's review singles out "Logan's friction-filled relationship with Victor", strong performances for Essex and Mystique, and above all the dynamic between Jean and Wolverine, which it says Insomniac "absolutely nails". Game director Mike Daly told Game Informer that "no character is a better foil for Logan" than Sabretooth.

Bolivar Trask and the Reavers

Bolivar Trask is the human villain: "a billionaire industrialist driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority", who has found a way to detect mutants with machines and builds the Sentinels. The launch trailer sums him up: "Trask hates us. Not for what we are, but what we represent." His soldiers are the Reavers, a "guns-for-hire cybernetic militia" that captures mutants for him. Their unit types are on Enemies.

Omega Red

Omega Red is the first boss, fought at Trask's compound in Telambang. In this game he is a mutant Team X once turned away. In AFGuidesHD's recording he tells Logan they knew how he was treated in Russia, "an outcast no better than an animal", and still threw him out; now he fights alongside the Reavers, who "don't care what or who I crave". He fights with long tentacles. The fight is on Omega Red Boss Fight.

Lady Deathstrike and the Hand

In Japan, Logan and Jean face the Hand, a ninja cult, and "their leader Lady Deathstrike", as Skill Up puts it. He describes the Japan arc as connected to the main quest but with "side quest energy", since Team X falls into the background. The Hand worship a master they call the Beast, and Deathstrike hates Logan for something he did long before he lost his memories.

In the boss fight on Mount Haku, Deathstrike says she clawed her way out of chains to lead the Hand and "became something else, something perfect", and taunts Logan that without his mutation he is nothing; she says she forged herself. Who the Beast is, and why the Hand call Logan "Shinigami", are on Ending Explained; the fight is on Lady Deathstrike Boss Fight.

Leech and Walter

Leech is a young mutant whose power cancels the powers of other mutants. Logan finds his hideout in the basement of a Vancouver warehouse in The One That Got Away, where IGN's Easter egg hunters found a Daily Bugle and Leech's comic books. Coaxing him out of a locked room with a password is one of the quiet scenes reviewers mention (Story).

Walter is Essex's right-hand man and a regular at the Princess Bar, where a side conversation has Logan bring him a record, "The Dark End of the Street". IGN's ending video describes him as a man who carries the mutant gene without showing any powers. His story has the trophy Small Mercies, "Set Walter free", and it is one of the game's sadder threads.

Other mutants: Tyger, Callisto, Shiro and Toad

Toad turns up in Essex's manor: in IGN's Easter egg video, talking to him while searching for Leech's drawings is when Logan delivers his most famous line, "I'm the best there is at what I do. But what I do best isn't very nice", first said in Wolverine #1 in 1982.

Madripoor's Lowtown is a haven for mutants, and many of the smaller parts live there. Tyger runs the Princess Bar, the hub where Logan drinks between missions (PlayStation Blog, Aug 13, 2026). Callisto, leader of the Morlocks in the comics, works with Jean to protect mutants, and the trophy Greased asks you to read her journal in her Vancouver garage.

In Japan, Logan visits the penthouse of Shiro Yoshida, a mutant better known as Sunfire, where a stack of comics starts with Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man's debut. Dazzler does not appear, but she is a pop star on billboards around Madripoor. More of these are on Spider-Man Connections and Easter Eggs.

Who is not in the game

No X-Men team, no Charles Xavier, no Magneto and no Cyclops. Daly told Game Informer the story is "more of an exploration of the character than the world", and that "There are no X-Men to help." Spider-Man, the Avengers and other heroes exist in this universe, but none appears.

We think the cast's strength is its size: a small group of characters gives Jean, Logan and Victor room that a full X-Men roster would not. In our view Mystique is the clear loss, a shape-shifter used mostly as a voice on the radio, and we would expect her to get a larger part if Insomniac returns to Team X. We also think Walter is the most underrated character in the game, a powerless man in a world of mutants, and his scenes at the Princess Bar are some of its best writing.
